Clarke, 32, has a history with the D-backs, having been drafted by them in the third round in 2015. He made a significant impact in his first few seasons, appearing in 78 games (20 starts) from 2019 to 2021. However, the team decided to non-tender him in November 2021, allowing him to become a free agent.
After his departure, Clarke signed with the Royals, pitching for them for three seasons. During this time, he appeared in 156 games (two starts) and demonstrated his versatility, making 51 appearances last season. Clarke's performance was impressive, as he maintained a 1-1 record with a 3.25 ERA and held opponents to a mere .194 batting average. He was one of only two pitchers in the big leagues to make 50 or more appearances and allow nine or fewer walks.
The Diamondbacks are counting on Clarke to provide length in the bullpen, recognizing his potential to contribute significantly. General Manager Mike Hazen expressed confidence in Clarke's abilities, stating, 'Obviously, we know the makeup and have a long history with him, so it was a good fit for us.'

Hazen acknowledges that the bullpen might appear less experienced at the start of the season, as co-closers Justin Martinez and A.J. Puk recover from Tommy John surgery.
