Guerschon Yabusele's Unfulfilling Knicks Journey Ends with Trade to the Bulls
Guerschon Yabusele's time with the New York Knicks has come to an abrupt end. The team has traded him to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Dalen Terry, according to ESPN. This move, ahead of the 3 p.m. trade deadline on Thursday, was anticipated as the Knicks had previously expressed interest in trading the struggling Yabusele.
Yabusele's two-year contract, worth approximately $12 million, included a player option for the following year. The Knicks were fortunate not to require additional draft compensation to facilitate the trade, as they had no such assets to offer. This deal marks the Knicks' most significant free-agent signing in two years, since acquiring Donte DiVincenzo.
After several years playing overseas, Yabusele revitalized his career with the French national team during the 2024 Olympics and with the Philadelphia 76ers last season. The Knicks envisioned him as a crucial contributor to their enhanced bench unit, providing much-needed depth at the big man position.
However, Yabusele's role in the Knicks' system has diminished under coach Mike Brown. Interestingly, he signed with the Knicks before Brown's official hiring as head coach. In 41 games with the Knicks, Yabusele averaged a modest 2.7 points, shooting 39.3 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from three-point range. He was notably absent from the team's last three games, during which trade discussions were ongoing.
Yabusele's comments earlier this week hinted at his realization of the situation. He expressed gratitude for his career opportunities, stating, 'I'm blessed for everything that's happened in my career so far... I'll take it as it comes.'
Dalen Terry, a guard in his fourth season, averages 3.5 points per game, shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from three-point range. Terry will become a free agent after the season, making Yabusele's contract for the following year more manageable for the Knicks.
This trade marks a significant shift in the Knicks' strategy, as they aim to improve their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
