Mayon Volcano on Red Alert: Albay Prepares for Possible Eruption - Latest Updates 2026 (2026)

The Philippines braces for potential volcanic disaster as Mayon Volcano stirs. But is it enough to keep people safe?

In a recent development, the Albay province has been placed on red alert due to the restlessness of Mayon Volcano. On January 1, 2026, police officers diligently guarded checkpoints, ensuring no curious onlookers ventured into the restricted areas. This included the famous Mayon Skyline in Tabaco City, a popular tourist spot now off-limits.

The Disaster Operation Center in Legazpi City is on high alert, with Governor Noel Rosal taking swift action. He instructed all disaster management teams in the vicinity to prepare for potential emergencies. The governor's advisory urged everyone to remain vigilant and await official updates from Phivolcs, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Governor Rosal's orders were clear: a ban on all human activities within the 6-kilometer danger zone. This means no off-road adventures with all-terrain vehicles beyond the Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga. The iconic Mayon Skyline is also temporarily closed to visitors.

Furthermore, the governor advised aviation authorities to warn pilots about the potential risks of flying over the volatile volcano.

Phivolcs raised the alert level to Level 2 on December 31, 2025, due to a startling increase in rockfalls. In just two months, 599 rockfall events were recorded, with 47 occurring on the last day of the year alone. These rockfalls are fragments of volcanic material that cascade down from the summit crater.

Volcanologist Deborah Fernandez explained that this activity indicates the growth of the lava dome, a potential precursor to an eruption, as seen in 2023. Phivolcs warned that the frequent rockfalls and swelling slopes are signs of an increased eruption risk.

Should an eruption occur, nearby communities could face severe volcanic hazards, according to Phivolcs. Residents like Jess Mantes, living close to the danger zone, have already noticed the ominous sounds of falling rocks. Mantes is prepared to evacuate if necessary, trusting the authorities to make the right call.

And this is where it gets controversial: How effective are these safety measures? Are residents truly prepared for a potential eruption? Share your thoughts in the comments below. Remember, staying informed and engaged is crucial for everyone's safety!
