Stranger Things 5: Who Survives and Who Doesn’t in the Series Conclusion
SPOILER ALERT! This article reveals key plot details from the series finale of Stranger Things (https://deadline.com/tag/stranger-things/).
After a decade-long journey, Stranger Things has reached its conclusion with an emotionally charged two-hour finale that aired on New Year’s Eve. Throughout its final season, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have been diligently working to resolve all lingering questions regarding the enigmatic Upside Down and the supernatural terrors that have haunted Hawkins, Indiana, since November 6, 1983. The finale picks up right where Episode 7, titled "The Bridge," left us hanging, as the characters prepare for their ultimate confrontation with Vecna, played by Jamie Campbell Bower.
Their strategy involves a multi-faceted assault—attacking Vecna not only within his mind but also physically from inside the Abyss. Although the group encounters numerous obstacles along the way, they ultimately succeed in vanquishing Vecna and the Mind Flayer, bringing much-needed relief to Hawkins.
So, do all the main characters survive this climactic battle?
The succinct answer is: we believe they do.
Upon escaping the Upside Down, the group finds themselves confronted by military forces. Meanwhile, Hopper (David Harbour) and Murray (Brett Gelman) have already set the timers on their explosives, signaling that the bridge is about to collapse at any moment.
As the characters are being apprehended, Mike (Finn Wolfhard) realizes that Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is missing. He catches a glimpse of her standing just inside the gate to the Upside Down, and despite being restrained by a soldier, he attempts to rush to her side. In an emotional moment, Eleven enters Mike’s mind, allowing them to share a heartfelt goodbye. She conveys the necessity of her self-sacrifice to ensure the safety of her friends, explaining that if she doesn't take this step, the government will continue their dangerous experiments.
In a poignant scene, she ejects Mike from her consciousness just as the bombs detonate and the Upside Down begins to collapse.
But hold on—months later, we see Mike, Will (Noah Schnapp), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Max (Sadie Sink), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) don caps and gowns as they graduate from high school. After the ceremony, they gather to wrap up a Dungeons and Dragons campaign, during which Mike shares his latest theory about their beloved mage (the name he used for Eleven), who played a crucial role in their recent victory. He suggests that perhaps she didn’t actually sacrifice herself after all. As he elaborates on his theory, the episode flashes back to the destruction of the Upside Down.
This time, viewers witness how Eleven managed to escape, aided by her sister Kali (Linnea Berthelsen). Kali uses her abilities to execute a final mind trick on everyone before she meets her demise in the Upside Down, making it appear as if Eleven was still at the gate. In truth, Eleven had slipped away into the tunnels, successfully eluding capture. The scene transitions to show her hiking through a mountainous area while Mike speculates that their mage has found refuge in a distant town.
As Max and the others begin to comprehend Mike’s implication about Eleven's fate, they express skepticism about how they could ever truly know. Mike counters that while certainty is elusive, they can choose to believe in possibilities, just as he does. They take turns pledging, "I believe," around the table, reinforcing their bond.
If we interpret this scene literally, it suggests that Eleven did, indeed, survive her harrowing ordeal. However, the interpretation is open to personal belief.
Additionally, fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the Duffers have confirmed that Ted Wheeler (Joe Chrest) is alive and well! His fate had been uncertain after the Demogorgon attacked him in his home during Volume 1. While we had seen Karen Wheeler (Cara Buono) since that incident, many were left wondering if we would see Ted again (https://deadline.com/lists/biggest-questions-stranger-things-finale-season-5-volume-2/).
Despite the intense confrontations with Vecna and the Mind Flayer, the primary characters manage to survive the series’ climactic moments.
