Top ETFs 2025: Avoid These for Your Portfolio - Expert Warning (2026)

Are you tempted to chase the top-performing ETFs of 2025? Hold on a moment! While it's exciting to see funds soar, blindly following the winners of the previous year could be a costly mistake. Experts warn that these high-flying investments might have 'very little, if any' place in your long-term portfolio. Let's dive in and uncover why.

In 2025, the stock market, as tracked by the S&P 500 (represented by the three largest ETFs), saw a healthy return of approximately 16%. But some investors, depending on their ETF choices, could have experienced significantly greater gains.

For instance, the MicroSectors Gold Miners 3X Leveraged ETN, which follows a privacy-focused cryptocurrency, skyrocketed by an astonishing 796%! Other ETFs focused on metal mining and Korean stocks also delivered impressive returns.

While it's natural to dream about what could have been, Jeff Ptak, a managing director at Morningstar Research Services, advises caution. He stresses that these top performers should play a minimal role in your portfolio. He points out that the funds at the top of these lists are often niche, highly volatile, and not suited for prudent, long-term investing.

Beware the Allure of the Big Winners

Prudent, long-term investing is generally the cornerstone of building wealth. So, what makes these 2025 winners potentially unsuitable for your portfolio?

  • Leveraged Funds: A common characteristic among the top performers is the use of leverage. These funds aim to amplify returns by using derivatives. Instead of simply tracking an index, they aim for 2X or 3X the return. This strategy makes them highly volatile, making them prime candidates for both the best and worst-performing lists. Roxanna Islam, head of sector and industry research at TMX VettaFi, notes that leverage is often present at the top.

The challenge with leveraged funds is that they aim for 200% to 300% of the index's daily return, resetting each trading day. This makes them suitable for day traders, not long-term investors. Islam explains that these are short-term trading instruments, intended for holding for a single day, not a whole year, despite the high returns seen in 2025.

  • Volatile Market Areas: Another trend among the winning ETFs of 2025 was precious metals mining funds. It's no surprise that companies involved in mining precious metals performed well. Gold prices increased by about 65% in 2025, and silver rose by over 140%. These companies benefit from rising precious metal prices.

While owning precious metals, often as a portfolio diversifier or an inflation hedge, is a common investment strategy, investing in miners is a different ball game, according to Ptak. He points out that, in addition to metal price fluctuations, the stock prices of these firms are also influenced by changes in the underlying business, which can be volatile and often highly indebted. Ptak views mining ETFs as only slightly less speculative than leveraged funds.

Making Smarter Investment Choices

When considering any high-performing fund, it's crucial to assess its long-term track record and how it aligns with your investment strategy. Seeking advice from a financial professional can be beneficial.

Remember, when reviewing year-end lists, focus on consistent, long-term returns rather than short-term gains. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results, particularly with smaller, niche ETFs. These often don't show consistent outperformance year after year like a broad stock market ETF.

But here's where it gets controversial... Do you think it's possible to successfully incorporate some of these high-performing, yet volatile, ETFs into a long-term investment strategy? Or, do you agree with the experts that they should be avoided? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
